What I’m Watching in October: Netflix Edition

With the cold weather starting to arrive in NYC, I’ve found myself bundled up on the couch watching more documentaries and shows than I have in quite some time. Thankfully, Netflix has no shortage of new content to watch, with endless amounts of entertainment right at your fingertips.

The Queen’s Gambit

I’m embaressed to say that Jonathan and I finished this 7-episode limited series in one weekend. The Queen’s Gambit is a thriller from start to finish, following a 1950’s orphan who reveals an astonishing talent for chess while dealing addiction. The lead, Anya Taylor-Joy, is absolutely incredible. I would not be surprised to see her winning an Emmy for this role. Truly a must-watch!

Dream Home Makeover

I’ve been following Studio McGee on Instagram for quite some time now, so when I heard they had a show launching on Netflix, I was beyond excited. For anyone who watches HGTV and loves Fixer Upper, this is your show. The only downside is that episodes are fairly quick (30 minutes), and there’s only 6 episodes. But I think this may have been due to the pandemic. I heard season 2 will be coming out in 2022! Warning: watching this show may result in wanting to buy a house, remodeling your kitchen, or buying all new furniture.

Away

Who doesn’t love Hilary Swank? She’s absolutely amazing in Away, a drama-filled 10 episode show about her mission as commander to Mars. As you can imagine, a 3-year stint away from home means missing her husband and children, and the further she gets away from them, the closer she gets to those on board her mission.

My Next Guest Needs No Introduction

I’ve loved every single season of David Letterman’s, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, and this October his 3rd season debuted. Due to Covid-19, there are only 4 episodes, but Kim Kardashian West was a true highlight for me. I find her pretty fascinating, and it’s the first time in years she’s gone into detail about the Paris robbery. Other guests include Lizzo, Robert Downy Jr., and Dave Chappelle.

My Octopus Teacher

South African documentary filmmaker Craig Foster met an unlikely friend in the coastal waters of Africa, which led to his daily underwater dive to visit his new friend, an Octopus. Not only is this documentary beautifully shot, it’s also absolutely fascinating to see the relationship between Craig and the Octopus, while watching the Octopus grow from a baby to an adult navigating the depths of the Ocean. Truly a must-watch if you love nature.

The Great British Bake-Off, Season 8

You can check out the latest season of the Great British Bake-Off on Netflix, with new episodes every Friday. I’ve loved every season of this show, from the quirky contestants, to the goofy hosts, and uber-tough judges. It’s the perfect show to throw on as background noise while you’re working on a project or want something carefree and easy to binge.

David Attenborough, A Life on our Planet

By now you’re probably catching a theme here, that we love nature shows. So naturally, David Attenborough is one of our favorite voices. His new documentary recounts his life, and the evolutionary history of life on Earth, to grieve the loss of wild places and offer a vision for the future. While it’s a bit depressing at times, he gives a hard look at what we’ve done to our planet, and how it’s not to late to make the changes needed for survival.
